Next year's Cultural Olympiad is expected to include more national and international performing arts groups and events, as the seven-week cultural festival marks the one-year countdown to the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Vanoc is scheduled to announce Tuesday the full lineup of the 2009 Cultural Olympiad, which runs from Feb. 1 to March 21.
More major arts groups of the calibre of the United Kingdom's Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Orchestra Feb. 15 at the Orpheum) and Israel's Batsheva Dance Company Feb. 20 and 21 at the Playhouse) are expected to be part of the second Cultural Olympiad.
Other previously announced performances include Ronnie Burkett's Billy Twinkle: Requiem for a Golden Boy and Montreal Danse's On the Ice of Labrador Feb. 1-8 and March 3-7 respectively at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre).
An estimated 170,000 people attended 300 free and ticketed performances in Metro Vancouver, Britannia Beach and Whistler earlier this year in the first Cultural Olympiad.
Although an Olympic Games is primarily about sports, Games organizers recognize that cultural events can involve people who may not be interested in competition or can't afford tickets to sports events.
By holding two Cultural Olympiads prior to the 2010 Winter Games, Vanoc is extending the experience of an Olympics over a longer period of time than during the Games.
The International Olympic Committee considers arts and culture to be an important part of an Olympics.
The Olympic charter requires each host city to organize a program of cultural events that "serve to promote harmonious relations, mutual understanding and friendship among the participants and others attending the Olympic Games."
