Canadian Olympic Athletes & Top Calgary Chefs to compete for culinary gold medal

November 20, 2006

CALGARY, Alberta: Canadian Olympic Gold medallist Catriona Lemay Doan and Canadian Olympic Bronze medallist Mellisa Hollingsworth-Richards will be the keynote speakers as ten of Alberta's most accomplished chefs compete for top honours at the Gold Medal Plates Gala on November 22nd at the Hyatt Regency Ballroom.

The event, one of seven across Canada this year, pairs premiere chefs with Canadian Olympic and Paralympic athletes in a competition to crown a gold, silver and bronze medal culinary team. It is a celebration of Canadian Excellence and GE Canada and EPCOR are the title sponsors.

The taste buds of those attending the event will also be winners as guests will have the opportunity to sample each chef's creation and a selection of great Canadian wines. Participants will also have a chance to meet and mingle with the chefs and featured athletes, and participate in an astonishing Live Auction featuring experiential packages. Imagine spending 4 days with gold medal gymnast Kyle Shewfelt in Disneyworld or cycling the Napa Valley with gold medal triathlete Simon Whitfield.

The ten Albertan chefs who were chosen to compete in the event are Ned Bell of Redwater Rustic Grille; Shaun Desaulniers of Belgo Brasserie; Cam Dobranski of Muse; Chris Grafton of Murrieta's West Coast Bar & Grill; Christopher Joyce of Thompsons at the Hyatt; Andrew Keen of Tribune; Michael Lyon of Giorgio's in Banff; Scott Pohorelic of River Café; Paul Rogalski of Rouge; and Antionietta Terrigno of Osteria de Medici.

A highlight for many in attendance, will be hearing first-hand the inspiring personal stories of Calgary's own Olympic Gold medallist Catriona Lemay Doan and Olympic Bronze medal sweetheart Mellisa Hollingsworth-Richards.

Doan and Hollingsworth will be joined at the event by fellow Canadian Olympians Kyle Shewfelt, Lori-Ann Muenzer, Pierre Lueders, Danielle Goyette, Jeremy Wotherspoon, Jeff Pain and others.

A team of national food critics and a local jury will decide the top three winning creations. Along with medals and bragging rights, the winners will receive an opportunity to compete for a national title in February of 2007.

Title sponsors are GE Canada and EPCOR. Proceeds from the event will be divided between the Canadian Olympic Foundation's initiatives: Own the Podium 2010 and Road to Excellence, supporting winter and summer athletes.

The event is sold out.
